Libraries have a special place for Victoria County residents.
Shortly after Alexander Graham Bell first began to visit Victoria County in the 19th century, his wife Mabel Bell and other seasonal residents began to collect books from their homes in Washington D.C., to create a free, public lending library here. In its earliest days, it was only the second library in Nova Scotia. Its first location in 1891 was in the sheriff’s office in the Baddeck Courthouse, where library patrons and those awaiting trial could mingle and share books.
Since 1950, Victoria County libraries are operated by the Cape Breton Regional Library service. There are two library locations in Victoria County.
