British Home Child Day – September 28th

September 28th is recognized as British Home Child Day

This day recognizes the migration scheme that saw more than 100,000 children sent from Britain to Canada between 1869 and the late 1930s to work as farmers and domestic servants. Many of these children were sent to Canada without the knowledge or consent of their parents. Over 5000 came to Nova Scotia , with many of those sent to Cape Breton. It is estimated that over 4 million Canadians are descendants of the British Home Children. These children and their descendants  have contributed greatly to Canada, yet it is a part of Canadian history that is vastly unknown.

As a municipality we are taking part in the “Beacons of Light for British Home Children Tribute” by illuminating our municipal building on Saturday, September 28, 2024. We encourage the residents of Victoria County to recognize this day by turning  a porch light on to acknowledge these children.

The British Home Children and Descendants Association of Nova Scotia is holding its annual reunion at the Whycocomagh Waterfront Centre on Saturday, September 28th.
