Victoria County Public Works is taking an innovative approach to managing construction and demolition (C&D) materials. A newly acquired shredder will help extend the life of the existing C&D disposal site at the Baddeck Waste Management Facility while avoiding the significant expense of developing a second area for this material.
The existing C&D site was approaching capacity, and creating a new disposal area under current environmental regulations would be costly. Rather than pursue that option, the Municipality invested in a industrial shredder to make better use of the space already available.
The shredder breaks materials into smaller pieces, allowing more to fit within the existing disposal area. It can reduce material volume by up to a ratio of 4:1, helping Public Works make the most of the remaining capacity for C&D materials.
The benefits extend beyond Baddeck. The shredder will also be used at the Dingwall Transfer Station to reduce the size of C&D materials before they are transported to Baddeck. Smaller loads mean more material can be moved per trip, helping reduce the number of trips and associated fuel costs.
Looking ahead, the equipment also creates opportunities to recover metals for recycling and explore other ways to reuse or process materials. Public Works will continue to assess how the shredder could support additional recycling and material recovery opportunities at municipal facilities.
This investment is a practical example of how Victoria County is finding innovative, cost-conscious ways to manage waste and resources responsibly to deliver value for local taxpayers.
