Council Recap – Feb 22, 2021

Council met for a full day Monday, February 22, 2021 – the first in a series of discussions regarding the Victoria County 2021-2022 budget and council priorities for the next few years.

The process of setting priorities provides council and staff with a road map. It has replaced the former method of developing a 5 – 10-year strategy. Council will revisit the current priorities periodically in the term for evaluation. Part of formalizing this process this year was to conduct a survey for residents. More information on both what residents said and what council determines will be provided in the coming weeks.

  • A Victoria County Youth Council will move forward. This is an initiative to teach youth about how municipal government works.
  • The Municipal Police Advisory Committee is still looking for two Victoria County citizen members to determine priorities, objectives, and goals respecting police services and to provide advice in the area. This committee does not exercise jurisdiction regarding complaints, discipline, personnel conduct, or internal management of the local RCMP. Send letters of interest, a brief biography and information on your skills & experience by 4 pm on Friday March 5, 2021 to leanne.maceachen@countyvictoria.ns.ca.
  • Jim Mustard presented to council regarding his Raising the Villages initiative.
  • Council will move forward on a graffiti bylaw to address spray painting along roadways.

Council minutes are posted on the Victoria County website, once approved by council. Find more council minutes here: victoriacounty.com/government/municipal-council/meeting-minutes/.

The next session of Victoria County Municipal Council takes place March 8, 2021 at 5 pm in the Council Chambers at 495 Chebucto Street, Baddeck and will be live streamed on the Municipality of Victoria County NS Facebook page. If you wish to attend, please pre-register by calling 902-295-3231. Social distancing protocols are in place and a mask is required.
