Changes to Provincial Short Term Rentals & Tourism Accommodation Registration

Tourism accommodation and short term rental operators in Victoria County are required by the Province of Nova Scotia to register their tourism accommodations. As of September 2024, the Province is requiring that operators show proof of compliance with Municipal land use by-laws and has advised operators to contact their Municipality for more information.

The Municipality of the County of Victoria has a contract with the Eastern District Planning Commission to produce zoning related documents and letters on behalf of the Municipality.

Operators should contact the Eastern District Planning Commission in writing to request the required document by emailing: rentals@edpc.ca.

Please note that it can take time to process your request, so operators should contact them as soon as possible.

Operators should take note that it is an offence to operate Short Term Rentals and Tourism Accommodations in Nova Scotia without a valid registration number, and that the Province has increased the fines for offences.

Post your civic address

The Nova Scotia Emergency Management Office (EMO) says posting your civic address is important for emergency responders to quickly find your home or business. Victoria County couldn’t agree more. We even have a bylaw to support it. Posting your civic address is essential in rural communities where driveways are distanced and streetlighting is varied. In addition to emergency services, you may also need it posted for deliveries, utilities and other service providers, and to help visitors find you.

According to the EMO, to effectively post your civic address you need to:

  • make sure to post your civic number in front of your home and workplace
  • make sure it’s clearly visible from the road
  • ensure the civic sign has enough light that it can be seen at night

If you have posted your civic address, spring is a great time of year to check on it. Make sure it’s still intact after winter snow removal season and that it is clean and visible. If you do not have your civic address posted, the province has a list of civic address posting and sign suppliers by county. Click here to access the list.
