Promotional graphic for Victoria County’s Earth Day 2026 featuring a lush green forest and river valley under a blue sky. Large text reads “Earth Day 2026 – Our Power, Our Planet,” with a globe icon in the word “Our,” and a banner stating “Local solutions to combat climate change.”

Our Power, Our Planet: Local Solutions to Combat Climate Change

The theme for Earth Day 2026 is Our Power, Our Planet and focuses on individual actions and local solutions to combat climate change.

Victoria County’s municipal services give easy ways to reduce waste and protect our environment this Earth Day and everyday. Here are a few simple actions you can take.

Support our ReUse Centre!

Before sending something to the landfill, ask yourself, could someone else use this?

Give your items a second life and a chance to be new to someone else. By donating to the ReUse Centre, you’re not only keeping items out of the landfill, you’re also supporting local non-profits in our community.

Learn more at: ReUse Centre – Victoria County

Don’t throw out your textiles

Textiles make up about 9% of landfill waste!

Before tossing, consider donating, thrifting or repairing your clothing when you can.
If it can’t be worn, fixed or reused you can bring it to our Enviro-Depots in Baddeck and New Haven for recycling. Wear it out! Don’t throw it out.

Compost your food waste

Organics are the #1 material found in Nova Scotia landfills.

When food ends up in the garbage, it produces methane, a harmful greenhouse gas, and wastes valuable resources like water, energy and time. Instead, use our curbside organics collection to compost food scraps and keep them out of the landfill.

If it can’t be donated or eaten, compost it!

Every small change adds up. By using the services available right here in Victoria County, we can work together to reduce waste and protect our environment!

Happy Earth Day!

Community Drop-In Support for Municipal Services and Programs

Residents are invited to drop in to speak directly with municipal staff and get help without needing to travel to the municipal office.

Municipal Grant Application Support

This year the Municipal Grant Program application is available online to make it easier and more efficient.

  • Residents are encouraged to review the Municipal Grants Policy in advance to confirm eligibility and requirements.

Mi’kmaw History Month – October 2025

Mi’kmaq History Month was established in Nova Scotia to promote education and awareness of the Mi’kmaw culture during the month of October. Each year a poster is created to highlight aspects of Mi’kmaw culture. This year, the poster theme is A’tukwemk aq A’tukowinu’k – Storytelling and Storytellers. It celebrates the importance of story in Mi’kma’kik.

Get involved

Victoria County residents are encouraged to participate in events that promote awareness and education of Mi’kmaw history and culture in October. You can join in celebrating culture, tradition and community at the Wagmatcook Powwow on October 18 and 19, 2025!

Why October?

Treaty of 1752

When the English arrived in Mi’kma’ki (the Mi’kmaq homeland that includes present-day Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, central and eastern New Brunswick, the Gaspe Peninsula and Newfoundland) the Mi’kmaq and the Crown signed treaties of peace and friendship so they could live in harmony and peace.

The 1752 Treaty showed the Crown’s intentions to make peace, provide trading posts, and protect the land and way of life for the Mi’kmaw people. The Treaty also designated October 1 as the date on which the Mi’kmaw people would receive gifts from the Crown to “renew their friendship and submissions.” (https://mikmaqhistorymonth.ca/about/)

A tipi stands on the shore of a lake under a cloudy sky. The tipi is decorated with star patterns and has an open entrance. Text above the tipi reads 'National Indigenous History Month'

June is National Indigenous History Month🪶

This month, and throughout the year, we honour the history, culture, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples across Canada. In Victoria County, we show deep respect for the Mi’kmaq, the original caretakers of this land.

Victoria County proudly flies the Mi’kmaw flag year-round as a sign of our ongoing commitment to truth, reconciliation, and respect.

We encourage all residents to take time this month to learn, reflect, and engage with the rich history of Mi’kma’ki. One great place to start is the Wagmatcook First Nation Cultural and Heritage Centre. You can learn more about what they offer in the video below:

The Gaelic Nova Scotia Logo and text

Gaelic Nova Scotia Month

Cape Breton is home to some of the strongest Gaelic traditions in Nova Scotia, especially here in Victoria County! From our language and music to our stories and sense of community, we are proud of our Gaelic traditions.

May is Mìos nan Gàidheal in Nova Scotia which is a time to celebrate and promote awareness of the history, culture, language, contributions, and achievements of Gaels across the province.

Join us at the Victoria County Municipal Building on Monday, May 5th at 10:45AM as we raise the Gaelic flag and mark the start of Gaelic Nova Scotia Month, celebrating the vibrant culture that we see throughout communities in the County.

This year’s theme is “‘S ann beò a tha a’ Ghàidhlig an Albainn Nuaidh | Gaelic Lives in Nova Scotia.” We hope that this theme serves to show all Nova Scotians the persistence and resilience between Gaels and Gaelic language and culture during the month of May.
