Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy

The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIPOP) Act in Nova Scotia is provincial legislation that gives people the right to access most records held by public bodies, such as government departments, municipalities, and other public institutions. Its purpose is twofold:

  1. Freedom of Information – It ensures transparency by allowing individuals to request and receive government records, subject to certain limited exceptions (for example, information related to personal privacy, security, or cabinet confidentiality).
  2. Protection of Privacy – It sets rules for how public bodies collect, use, and disclose personal information, helping safeguard individuals’ privacy rights.

In short, the FOIPOP Act balances openness and accountability in government with the protection of personal privacy.
