Information about Municipal Elections

Who can vote in the Municipal Election?

To be eligible to vote:

  • You must be 18 years or older and a Canadian citizen on the day of Advance Polling
  • You must have been an ordinarily1 resident of Nova Scotia for a period of at least six (6) months immediately preceding the first day of Advance Polling.
  • You must be an ordinarily resident in District 3 since immediately before the first advance polling day.

Who can’t vote?

  • The returning officer.
  •  An inmate in a correctional or reform centre.
  •  A person convicted of bribery under the Municipal Elections Act in the 6 years preceding election day.
  • Nova Scotia does not have non-resident voting. This means that municipal taxpayers who are not ordinarily resident in the municipality are not entitled to vote in that municipality, despite the fact that they own property there, or their children attend school there. What this means, is that if you normally live in Sydney but have a cottage in Ingonish, you can not vote in Victoria County. You can only vote in CBRM.

What is the Voting Process?

Voting for the 2026 District 3 By-election will be by paper ballot. Make sure you are on the voter list! Contact the Returning Officer steff.macleod@victoriacounty.ca or by phone at 1-902-295-3659

  1. Being an “ordinarily resident” in a Nova Scotia municipality means it is the place where you usually live, sleep, and intend to return to when away, regardless of where you take meals or are employed. This includes:
    • where a person is living temporarily at a place and if the person has no other place the person considers as that person’s place of residence,
    • where a person is provided with food, lodging or other social services by a shelter, hostel or similar institution, the person would be ordinarily resident in that shelter, hostel or other institution.
     • A person is not ordinarily resident in a seasonal dwelling generally only occupied between May and October unless the person has no other dwelling place.. ↩︎
